When a guy named Kyle Divine (from Dusty Rhodes and the River Band) showed up on my favorite guilty pleasure reality TV show L.A. Ink asking for a memorial tattoo for cheese -- that's right cheese, like the food -- it sounded like a joke. Ironic hipster. Check. Oversized gold-framed glasses. Check. Terrible mustache. Check. Plus, the dude also has tattoos of a hot dog and a taco. But then shit got real. The back story was shocking, as you'll see in the clip:
"I work at a grocery store and I was unloading a delivery truck with a hand-operated forklift and a car hit me from behind. And so the controls from the forklift went into my stomach and like smashed my small intestine. And immediately I just hunch over ... I was just in shock, freaking out. I go to the hospital and they ended up taking out 19 inches total of my small intestine. I get out of surgery and I'm like barely, barely alive ... Once I got out of the hospital ... I was having a lot of digestive problems and [the doctor] suggested that I cut out dairy from my diet ... and he told me that I was lactose intolerant. For me that was devastating because that's like my favorite food."
Ironic hipster or not, I kinda feel bad for the dude. The tattoo, by Kim Saigh, is an apt tribute piece too. Beautiful work.
