Brenda's French Soul Food: Kiss Their Grits

Bay Area Bites provides one of their characteristically lengthy write ups on Brenda's French Soul Food (652 Polk at Eddy) in the Tenderloin, a place I've been hearing great things about for months and still haven't tried -- hopefully this will finally push me over the edge. The food sounds heart-stoppingly wonderful, but do we really need a rundown of every interaction with the server and a description of every customer in the place? There are more scruffy men in this review than a Russian novel. Here are all the best parts about the food below:

  • "... the chewy sweetness of the crawfish [beignet] popping every so often through the ooze of the cheese, the heat of the cayenne, and the sharpness of the scallion. I am already planning my return to have a full meal of them."

  • "The grits. Buttery, lightly peppery, and just salty enough ... Well, I kissed Brenda's grits, and I'll kiss them again, happily."

  • "The Hangtown fry itself was good, loaded as it was with salty, smoked bacon and fresh, fried oysters."

Bonus: Nothing on the menu is over $10! I'm there.

Thanks for the link. I suppose my pieces are characteristically lengthy.

No, not everyone has the patience for a complete run down, but I try to give an account of what happens when I go out to eat. My interests lay not only with the food, but with the service and the people eating around me. It might bore some people to tears (sorry folks), but it's what interests me and, possibly, three to four other people.

And I still need a shave.
