Uh oh, Michael Bauer is not happy, and you know what that means: culinary bitch slap! Seems the long-acclaimed Nob Hill French restaurant Fleur de Lys was disappointing enough to lose a star, though Bauer's gripes are largely confined to the service rather than the food. The highlights, or lowlights, as follows:
In the 'Ho, Snap!' category:
"... the small lobby was as crowded as the gangway of Southwest Airlines when they call a flight."
"... the host ... looked as if she was going to a yoga class rather than presiding over one of the most elegant restaurants in San Francisco."
"We couldn't attract our waiter's attention so we asked the busser for the check. Still, it took another 15 minutes for our server to appear."
In the 'Daaaamn Son!' category:
"This couldn't be the Fleur de Lys I've known for 20 years."
"The poor timing not only seems unprofessional, it also sends a clear message that taking care of customers is not a top priority."
And finally, in the 'Say What?' category:
" ... I was bothered that at this time of year asparagus still shows up on the menu."
" ... Fleur de Lys has lost the devotion and sharp attention to detail that makes a four-star destination."
