Funeral Feasts: Grandma's Southern Fried Chicken, Chicago's Portillos Hot Dogs

portillos_hotdog.jpg

You can always count on southerners to do what everybody really wants to at a funeral: gorge themselves silly. Catherine Nash over at Bay Area Bites celebrates her Grandma's passing with a mouth-watering exploration of home style southern comfort food: deviled eggs, bread and butter pickles, pecan pie and chocolate fudge pie, among many others. Included is her Grandma's very own fried chicken recipe. It's times like these we wished we actually cooked.

Still, we can certainly relate. After our own Grandma's recent funeral in Chicago, the whole family headed over to Portillos for the Windy City equivalent: hot dogs, Italian beef, milkshakes and lovely, artery-clogging cheese fries.

After all, there's nothing like fatty food to remind you of your own mortality. And like Miss Nash says: "Eating feels good, even when everything else feels bad." Amen.
