Eric Andre's Comedy Might Get You Pregnant
Courtesy of Adult Swim.
Watching The Eric Andre Show is like watching a talk show through a fun-house mirror -- turned upside-down, and also you're high. The host, Eric Andre, is a 30-year-old musician turned comedian influenced by conceptual comedy pranksters and mock talk show hosts such as Tom Green and Space Ghost. You may remember him from Don't Trust the B-- in Apartment 23 as the coffee-shop employee and unrequited-love interest of Dreama Walker. That show's been cancelled, so this is your chance to reconnect with the man.
His show is touring live now, and it's making a stop in San Francisco for one night of unexpected and unexplained weirdness, possible horniness, and a splash zone that encompasses the entire venue.
SF Weekly: Can you hear me ok?
Eric Andre: I can hear you great. You sound great. Full of life.
So, your upcoming show in S.F.
Oh sure, sure.
What's the live show going to be like? How would you describe it to the uninitiated?
The live show, I'll just come out and destroy the whole stage, the whole set.
Do people respond well to that?
The crowd seems to love it.
Is Hannibal Buress going to be there?
He's doing a Comedy Central show, so he's only doing Atlanta and New Orleans, unfortunately. He was going to do the whole tour, but he got booked.
Are there any surprise guests planned?
Yeah, but if i told you it wouldn't be a surprise.
Can you ruin the surprise for me?
Is the show a good place for me to take a first date?
Absolutely. You'll probably end up pregnant, with twins. It's very romantic. You'll laugh, you'll learn, you'll love, you'll love out loud -- LOL!
How did you first come up for the idea for the show? How did you pitch it to Adult Swim?
I like a lot of mock talk shows, The Tom Green Show, Ali G, Jiminy Glick, Space Ghost, they're all percolating in my brain, you know. Me and my directors, and Hannibal, we did the show first and shot it in an abandoned bodega in Brooklyn.
How far in advance do you plan the show's gags?
The gags are both unplanned and planned.
Are the guests expecting any of it?
For the most part, no.
What's the typical reaction?
They don't know what the fuck is goin' on. The typical reaction is horniness.
When did you first get into comedy? I know you started out in music, was it a seamless transition?
My music, I wasn't like Weird Al. But I played music with comedic elements, like Frank Zappa, or Ween. I had a comedic approach to music.
What was your first standup gig like? Did people laugh?
I cheated, I invited like 50 of my friends.
You have a lot of friends.
When did you first know you were funny?
I still don't really know. I fuckin' suck!
But you make people laugh.
Sometimes people laugh, sometimes people lactate. Sometimes they queef. You know what I mean? So where do you live, the Duboce Triangle? By the Presidio? Oh I knew it.
You know the city?
What's the craziest idea you ever had for your talk show?
I wanted to drive a car into a marching band, a human band, and seriously injure four to five people. I was not able to pull that off. It would have been fuckin' awesome.
What kind of car?
A Chevy Aveo.
Will the show have a third season?
Maybe. Can't say just yet.
What else do you have planned, what else do you want to do?
Were you like a glam rocker in high school?
I'm not quite that old, I think.
Oh you were like goth.
I was an angry teen.
Were you like goth and like introverted?
Yeah, were you?
I was goth and extroverted, I was one of the rare ones.
Yeah, I'm an introvert.
You're like Howard Hughes, you like peed in jars?
Yeah well, I don't want to leave my room. What else will you do, more acting?
I did a couple pilots, we'll see what happens. I've got some things in the works.
