San Francisco may be topping some lists -- from being the best at budgeting to being kinky -- yet we seem to be losing a bit of steam in other pointless studies. But you already knew that, right?

According to a new survey from Movato Real Estate, when it comes to steampunk, the City by the Bay is on the right track, tying with Las Vegas for fourth place. Atlanta grabbed the top spot, followed by Winston-Salem and Orlando.

For those who aren't familiar with steampunk, it's is a type of literary subgenre of science fiction that focuses on narratives possessing fantastical elements of sky pirates and robotic men, and is set against the backdrop of an alternative period where steam power is a major source of energy. It tends to take place around the turn of the 19th century and has a Victorian feel -- wardrobe and all, according to the author of the survey.

This category and its train of thought travels beyond literary confines and influences modern-day architecture, fashion, and cities, hence the reason for conducting this pointless study. Ever seen someone riding a penny-farthing bike with a handlebar mustache and wearing some sort of bloomer-looking pants? This person is likely adhering to the steampunk lifestyle.

The criteria used to determine which cities are the most-steampunk-of-all are as follows:

    • Formal Wear (Dressing up to the nines! Fancy!)
    • Paranormal Societies
• Antique Stores (Vintage is a thing)
• Walkability (Cars aren't steampunk. Neither are horse drawn carriages. Really?)
• Steampunk conventions
• Flea markets (Steampunk is very DIY)
• Salvage yards (San Francisco placed second in this category, after Winston-Salem)
• Hardware stores

The survey projections assumed San Francisco would score higher, but apparently we don't have many paranormal societies, which are key to the steampunk lifestyle. If we're going to score high next year, we all better don our best monocle and head to the salvage yard.
