The British Are Coming
One of the most internationally renowned literary journals in the world (and rightfully so), Granta published the first "20 under 40" list 30 years ago with their Best of Young British Novelists. That issue, which included such up-and-comers as Ian McEwan and Martin Amis, was instrumental in defining the voice of a new generation; it also established a tradition. Since then, Granta has rolled out many Best Of series: Young Brazilian Novelists, Young Spanish-Language Novelists and so on, scouring the world for its best new literature.
This year -- this month -- Granta announces the fourth in its Best of Young British Novelists series. The expectations are so high they've kept the list secret for three months, finally announcing its authors on the radio and at the British Council in London. Editor John Freeman will be in town to present the new issue and have a conversation with two of its writers, Ross Raisin and Nadifa Mohamed, who will also read from their work.
Granta Presents: Best of Young British Novelists 4 starts Monday April 22 at 7 p.m. at the Book Club of California, 312 Sutter Street, Suite 500, S.F. Free; call 781-7532 or visit citylights.com.
