Local Crowdfunded Campaign of the Week: Food for Thought

Live Oak School Potrero Hill Learning Garden/100 Gardens Initiative

Last week, we broke down the crowdfunding process for you and pitched an awesome organization working to promote sexual health awareness. This week's local crowdfunded campaign is also about public health -- this time cultivating green thumbs and educating the community about healthy food choices.

The Live Oak School Potrero Hill Learning Garden is a part of the 100 Urban Gardens Initiative, a project to build 100 urban community gardens across 100 U.S. cities. The money for this campaign goes to fund San Francisco's garden and educate and engage participants, with the mission of strengthening "community relationships between people of diverse generations, backgrounds, and experience -- with urban farming as a catalyst for growing community resiliency."

By donating to this partnership between PACT, Whole Kids Foundation, and Indiegogo, donors can receive a variety of organic and sustainable thank you gifts, including socks, t-shirts, and underwear. For the truly committed, a $1,000 donation not only earns you ethical gear but also a display featuring your name at the garden. If you choose to fund the whole thing (all $2,500), the perks are vague, but "a very special package with a whole lot of love" sounds like it has the potential to be pretty sweet.

The campaign has received a lot of support so far, with 23 funders already raising $2,030. With 14 days left to go, results appear to be optimistic for them to acquire the remaining funds.

This week's honorable mention goes to Fine & Rare, a campaign to raise money to open a fresh fish counter, wine bar, and seafood restaurant. It may not be a nonprofit, but they had me at wine and lobster rolls. They have a ways to go on funding, but pledge incentives include gift cards to the future restaurant, wine glasses, and cooking classes.

Whether you opt to support food for the masses or food for you (or both, no need to choose), you can rest easy knowing you're supporting San Francisco's community and culture.
