SF Sketchfest Announces 2013 Lineup: A Feast of Comedy Like No Other

Every year, I gush about SF Sketchfest to anyone within earshot, and at this point I should probably stop feeling surprised when someone doesn't know what I'm talking about. But that doesn't change the fact that it's deeply unsettling to realize that there are San Franciscans who still, after 12 years, don't know that their city hosts one of the biggest and best annual comedy festivals in the country. Are there New Yorkers who don't know what the US Open is? Does anyone on the Monterey Peninsula not know what Pebble Beach is?

Well, SF Sketchfest is a veritable World Series of comedy -- a celebration of the art form in all of its many guises, an annual smorgasbord of live performances, tributes, workshops, reunions, and Robin Williams sightings.

The lineup for the 2013 festival was announced today, and SF Sketchfest's organizers have once again put together a stunningly varied schedule that embraces stand-up, improv, acting and writing, podcasting, sketch comedy, television, and film. Dozens upon dozens of comedians will gather in San Francisco from January 24 - February 10, 2013, for one of the biggest convocations of comic talent anywhere. Perusing the lineup is jaw-dropping and overwhelming -- the kind of thing that makes you want to clear your calendar of all responsibilities and commitments for the full two weeks of the festival.

Tributes are scheduled to include: the cast and creative team behind Adult Swim's Emmy-winning series, Children's Hospital, including Rob Corddry, Rob Huebel, and David Wain; actor, writer, and chin model Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, Army of Darkness) will be interviewed live at the Castro Theatre by comedian Patton Oswalt; the 25th anniversary of The Naked Gun will be marked with a screening attended by director and co-writer David Zucker, co-writer Pat Proft, and co-star Priscilla Presley; and director John Landis (The Blues Brothers, Trading Places) will introduce a 35th anniversary screening of his anarchic frat-house masterpiece, Animal House.

Other special events will include live riffing (improvised commentary on short films) with the RiffTrax crew (Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy) along with guest riffers Adam Savage, Paul F. Tompkins, and Kristen Schaal; a screening of Todd Solondz's influential indie comedy Welcome to the Dollhouse hosted by our own Peaches Christ with a guest appearance by star Heather Matarazzo; and a three-part follow-up to last year's incredibly successful "Reggidency," featuring comedy hyphenate Reggie Watts.

Improv and sketch comedy events will include the Upright Citizens Brigade, a collaboration between members of Naked Babies and Human Giant, the Improvised Shakespeare Company, and an improv workshop led by Kevin McDonald of the Kids in the Hall.

An intimidating array of stand-up shows are scheduled, featuring some of the biggest names in the business, including Maria Bamford, Steve Agee, Paul F. Tompkins, Eugene Mirman, Nick Kroll, Tim Heidecker, Neil Hamburger, Todd Barry, and Mary Lynn Rajskub.

And I haven't even mentioned the live podcasts (of which there are many), the theatrical events, the TV reunions, the storytelling sessions, and so much more. Events regularly sell out, so start planning now. Spread the word; there's no reason San Franciscans shouldn't be celebrating SF Sketchfest the way they do a World Series win (sans the pyromania and vandalism).
