Farewell, Fabric8: Mission Art Gallery Rebrands in 2013

Mission District gallery Fabric8 will emerge with a new identity next year.

Fabric8 started in 1995 as an online clothing store and became a physical business in 2006, a lovely space that encompasses clothing, art, a sculpture garden, a public parklet (which recently got a newly designed installation thanks to Kickstarter support), and an informal forum for fledgling food businesses to try out their ideas. The next group show, "A Plethora of Enchanted Delights," which runs from Dec. 8-Jan. 14, will be the last held under the Fabric 8 moniker.

In the spirit of change, Olivia Ongpin (who owns Fabric8 with husband Anthony Quintal), believes the new year is a ripe time for rebranding. They're not ready to share the new name quite yet, but expect fresh thoughts and a light remodel in early 2013.

"We are going to focus the space more on art," reveals Ongpin. "We'll offer a more select inventory of consumer goods and clothing, more one of a kind pieces."

"A Plethora of Enchanted Delights" features the work of local artists who have immeasurably helped Fabric8 establish its current identity, including new parklet designer Ursula X. Young, first parklet architect Erik Otto, DJ and collage master Romanowski, and the brilliantly melancholic Reuben Rude. It's a fitting finale to bring these minds together for the last show, a succinct expression of the continuing mission of the Fabric8 eye and soul.

"A Plethora of Enchanted Delights" opens Saturday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at Fabric8, 3318 22nd St. (at Valencia), S.F. Admission is free.
