Intersection for the Arts, the pioneering arts and community development org started by Rev. Ted McIlvenna in the '60s, was originally located in the back of a Norwegian rug shop. It was created as a meeting place for homeless kids or those from bad homes to have a place of refuge day or night.

It has grown and changed dramatically over the years, now partnering with over 50 community organizations, curating countless events, performances, trainings, and residencies for artists and art lovers. McIlvenna's path has appropriately intersected with IA once more, this time as the location for Mission by Penetration, a benefit for a documentary about his life called Revolutionary Sex.

A few tidbits about the 80-year-old reverend: A Methodist minister sent to S.F. to solve the church's "gay problem," McIlvenna instead became a champion for LGBT rights; he created the first grad school devoted to human sexuality, which he still runs; he opened the first Erotic Art Museum in 1973 in Union Square; and he has one of the largest collections of erotic art, some of which is for sale Sunday, and all proceeds benefit the making of the film and the Institute.

Treasures include signed "tit-prints" from former porn star Annie Sprinkle (the first porn star to get a Ph.D. at the school), rare adult film posters, and erotic table placemats. Still not enticed? The event also boasts music by The Love Dimension, hoop dance by Spiral, words by the Rev. and other sex radicals, a confession booth, appetizers, and champagne. Plus, you're helping to bring a fascinating San Francisco story into the world.

Mission by Penetration starts Sunday, Dec. 2 at noon at Intersection for the Arts, 925 Mission (at Fifth St.), S.F. Admission is free (though a $5 donation is appreciated).
