Video of the Day: Finally, a Film Festival Devoted to Horror and Dystopian Nightmares

Chris-Axe.jpg

Another Hole in the Head Film Festival is predicated on the proposition that horror -- and exploitation flicks and dystopian nightmares -- knows no bounds and no borders. (Or season, apparently, for this year's program lands closer to Christmas than Halloween. Then again, the most frightening words in the English language are "home for the holidays.") Anything goes at AHITH, except uninspired rehashes of too-familiar tropes.

"New blood," typified by Rodrigo Gudio's debut feature, the striking haunted house ghost story The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh (7 p.m.), could be the fest's slogan. Bradley Scott Sullivan's first feature, I Didn't Come Here to Die (9 p.m.), follows a cadre of idealistic young volunteers who set out on a good deed that takes them into the woods -- and we know how that's going to turn out, don't we? For those with stronger stomachs and darker dispositions, tonight's late slot belongs to Day Job (11 p.m.), Dave O'Shea's uncommonly disturbing tale of a cable repairman whose obsessive and (unsolicited, needless to say) urge to protect a female customer spells doom for most everyone else. Holiday dinner with the family may not be so hard to swallow after all.

Another Hole in the Head Film Festival begins Friday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. (and runs through Dec. 9) at the Roxie, 3117 16th St. (at Valencia), S.F. Admission is $10-$12.
