Video of the Day: Have a Crystal Ball with Dance Psychic Dr. Zebrovski
There's probably no such thing as an ordinary psychic. But for those who tire of mere palm reading and crystal ball gazing, Kevin Seaman and his creation Dr. Zebrovski, a dance psychic, are coming to the rescue Friday (and Saturday) in Dr. Zebrovski's Hour of Power. Dr. Zebrovski, says Seaman, "is a divinatory agent who only reads people's fortunes through dance: ballroom, ballet, tap, and modern. His psychic powers lie in movement." He's also "completely fraudulent." Seaman, Baruch Porras-Hernandez, and Maryam Rostami all play the terpsichorean medium, each emphasizing different aspects of his personality through seven scenes that represent seven different kinds of magic.
Under the direction of Beatrice Thomas, the show asks its audiences to consider that there's more out there than meets the eye -- many stories come from experiences of the supernatural in the performers' own lives -- but it also invites its audiences to laugh at themselves.
Dr. Zebrovski, says Seaman, tackles "all these different issues that people feel guilty about" -- buying organic food, supporting credit unions -- "and tries to get people to laugh about their insecurities." Purged of their anxieties, audiences are invited to participate in a post-show dance party; that's free, but pre-show readings (and lap dances) cost extra. The good doctor may be an unconventional psychic, but like the best, he knows you never give the goods for free.
