SFstop Photo Collective Showcases Our City's Quirks, Beauty

The city's newest photo collective, SFstop, formed entirely of current or former SF State photographers, is holding its first gallery show Sunday at Akiba Cafe. The free show will include works from 10 S.F. State students/alumni, and showcases moments stolen from some of the city's brightest characters, like "Bush Man," but also some of its unsung heroes through the power of some good ol' San Francisco street photography.

As a student, it can be hard to get your work into a gallery because that process has a lot to do with who you know, according to Gil Riego Junior, co-founder and featured artist of SFstop. So he decided to take matters into his own hands, lining up a venue and getting a group of his most talented peers to contribute San Francisco-themed photography to the exhibit.

SFstop, named as a play off of a camera's aperture setting, aims to photograph the beauty and interesting characters of this city we sometimes takes for granted.

"[The gallery exhibit] gives you a different perspective than your everyday life. Because sure, you've walked down the Embarcadero and seen Fisherman Wharf's "Bush Man" before, but has anyone ever really looked at "Bush Man" for more than five seconds while they're being terrified by him?" Riego explained.

These college students aren't messing around either. They have shot for most of the Bay Area's notable publications, including the Examiner, SFbay, The Bay Citizen, the Chronicle, Patch, and yes, the Bay Area's smartest publication, SF mudda fuckin' Weekly.

"SFstop's Quarterly Gallery Showcase" takes place Sunday Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. at Akiba Cafe, 3141 Clement (at 33rd Ave.), S.F. Admission is free.
