Video of the Day: Fifty Shades of Gay

On the surface, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby don't have much in common (aside from the promise of adventure!). But both are on the list of commonly challenged books -- that is, books that people have attempted to ban or withhold from the general public. Also high on the list are the Harry Potter series, for witchcraft and reverse muggle discrimination, we think; Judy Blume's Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret; and pretty much every book you can think of that vaguely or explicitly alludes to sex.

Not even the Bible gets off the hook when it comes to sex references, so it's not surprising that E. L. James' BDSM-themed Fifty Shades of Grey set off lots of alarm bells -- the book was banned this spring in libraries in three states. That's why the S.F. Public Library is hosting a counterattack called 50 Shades of Banned Books, in conjunction with Banned by the Bay and national Banned Books Week, which celebrates our right to read as much trashy erotica as we want, thankyouverymuch.

Joining the celebration and discussion is Emily Morse, local star of Bravo's Miss Advised and host of the podcast Sex with Emily. A book sale by Readers Books follows the event so you can indulge in that ever-so-risqué activity known as reading. We'll be there promoting our soon to be written and then banned memoir, Fifty Shades of Gay.

50 Shades of Banned Books starts at 6 p.m. at the Main Library, 100 Larkin (at Grove), S.F. Admission is free.

In this spirit, please enjoy Ellen DeGeneres reading Fifty Shades of Grey:
