Susan G. Komen Rejects Fundraising Efforts from Porn Site

Earlier this week, Internet porn site, Pornhub, announced the launch of its "Save the Boobs" campaign: In observation of breast cancer awareness month, it would be donating one cent to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for every 30 videos viewed from the tit-specific categories on its website. According to the current counter on the website (which is obviously NSFW), over 22 million videos have been viewed so far, bringing the total for the first week alone to approximately $7,333. It would be perfectly reasonable to anticipate a rapid uptick in that number once the general public becomes more aware of campaign -- whack off to support breast cancer research? That's right up a slacktivist's alley!

However, in a stupid (although not altogether surprising) twist of events, Susan G. Komen was quick to announce that they weren't interested in Pornhub's filthy sex money. "We are not a partner, not accepting donations, and have asked them to stop using our name," the Dallas-based organization said Wednesday.

While malignant tumors may not be the best boner-inspiring material, that obviously isn't really Komen's concern.

Considering that Komen is less than a year out of its debacle with Planned Parenthood, it may want to revise its PR strategy (since the "we have a stick up our collective ass" isn't going over well). A quick refresher: Earlier this year, Komen denied funding to Planned Parenthood, ending grants that provided breast cancer screenings and education to low-income women. In response to public outcry and accusations of bending to political pressure, Komen rapidly reversed the decision and apologized, although only after insisting that it was all one big misunderstanding.

The reality of the situation is this: Breast cancer research absolutely needs to be done, and requires an incredible amount of money to continue marching toward a cure. Pornhub is offering money to contribute to this cause. And Komen is turning it down for no reason other than the fact that it's coming from the porn industry.

Komen may not exactly be hard up for cash (the website claims to have invested almost $2 billion to date), and Pornhub may not be offering a lot in the grand scheme of fundraisers, but it's not about the numbers. Komen wouldn't turn away lemonade stand money because every cent counts. Every cent helps make a step toward finding a cure for a horrific disease. Which is why Komen is making it abundantly clear that it's not about the money -- it's about the politics. The organization simply does not want to associate themselves with what it perceives as dirty money.

It could be argued that accepting the money is anti-feminist; that objectifying women to acquire the money is defeating the purpose. But the purpose is to defeat breast cancer. Period. There are no mitigating circumstances here. The research needs to be done, the research needs funding, and Pornhub is offering to contribute funding. Could the means of fundraising be more introspective and meaningful to the cause than watching a parade of naked boobs? Sure. But that doesn't make the money less green.

P.S. Hollie Stevens was one of the women who was in my network to receive pampering before she passed away. Who cares - when you're sick, you need help and I loved her.

My foundation would take the money in a heartbeat. I pay for women who are going through cancer to go to spas across the U.S. It helps them and I'm sure they don't care where the money comes from since some of them are in stage 4 and just need some pampering. I've raised through different venues, including the Castro - gay, straight - someone has been touched by cancer and I'm trying to make these women feel better because I've been through 3 cancers myself and understand.
