Beyond BronyCon: Inside the My Little Pony Convention, Everfree Northwest

Categories: My Little Pony

The sheer number of attendees, combined with the laws of thermodynamics, meant the main events involving the voice actors had very long lines that quickly reached capacity. That most of them were in the Summit Grand Ballroom on the 12th floor further slowed things down because only so many people could travel by elevator at a time. Lines typically started inside ...

... and were necessarily moved outside, because of physics and stuff.

Waiting is just part of the convention experience, not to mention both the human and pony experience (cf. "The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000"), and I regarded it as evidence of the success of the convention. If there'd been meager crowds and no lines, it would have been incredibly depressing.

Both because it was faster than the elevator and I like exercise, I often just took the stairs up and down to my room. One could not go all the way to the 12th floor by the stairs, however, as a sign by Zecora (cf. "Bridle Gossip") on the 11th floor reminded us. Also, hydrate!

The "Ponies!" truck was not the only decorated vehicle. There was a car covered with blue tape and an invitation to write and draw on it ...

... which many did.

Including me.

There were many costumes to admire. Ilene was dressed in costumes she made herself as Pinkie Pie on Friday and Fluttershy on Saturday, and I wore a purple skirt Ilene made for me with Twilight Sparkle's cutie mark. My dreads are mostly purple and my bangs have been colored in Twilight's style (purple with a red off-center stripe) for several months, so that + the skirt = instant costume! Again, I didn't take a count, but I'm pretty sure there were more Pinkie Pies than any other character.

So Something I'd like to say, I know the person who made the plushies pictured at the top of page 2 (The Shining Armor and the Cadence) She was super excited to see that they were going to be featured like that.

It's a shame that your panel was scheduled against the opening ceremony, that sounds like a rough timeslot. I've really enjoyed your write-ups though, will you be doing S3?

@Traj True enough -- amidst the registration and rescheduling turmoil of that morning, I appreciated the audience that did show up all the more.  And heavens knows I've played to smaller crowds in my day. :)  Also, I'm glad you liked the recaps! I will indeed be doing S3, though I'm currently planning to wait for the season to finish before I start recapping it...

Heh, I was the one who mistook you for Pixelkitties. Sorry about that. I was very tired by the end of the con, and because of some kind of ASD I tend to make a mistake every time I open my mouth. :P But now I know who you are and I can say, I love you Sherilyn! And we're both in SF—hopefully I'll see you around sometime!

@PixelCoder Aw, shucks. :) Apology accepted, and don't worry about it -- being mistaken for Pixelkitties is hardly an insult!

Great article!I'm sorry to hear EFNW didn't go as planned... there was some serious star competition there.I saw your event in the schedule but didn't know what 'recapping' was... I thought it had to do with custom pony toys :P

@dutchsct Heh.  Recapping is an esoteric concept, that's for sure.  And something that I might not have properly expressed in the article is that I really did have a lot of fun at Everfree, my own silly anxieties notwithstanding.  I have nothing but positive feelings about the overall experience, and I intend to return in 2013.

@studiesincrap Actually, it's about Everfree Northwest, not BronyCon.
