Honesty seems to be a theme this week on the Exhibitionist. See how Oakland is killin' it, truth-wise.
We've all heard the adage "Honesty is the best policy," but when it comes to actually living it, we tend to fall short of the ideal. We fudge résumés, we weasel our way out of speeding tickets, we Photoshop unflattering pictures of ourselves on dating sites. We tell our partners, "Of course those sandals don't make your toes look fat!" Lying, in some respects, is a means of self-preservation in our increasingly public and demanding world.

Behavioral economist and popular TED Talk presenter Dan Ariely knows this all too well. In his talk on Wednesday, "The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty," based on his book by the same name, Ariely will highlight the contradictory yet all-too-human behaviors that lead us to fib -- from extramarital affairs to Ponzi schemes to illegally downloading your precious Mad Men episodes.
Ariely's unique insight and adept research skills promise to shed light on the fascinating misbehaviors that affect us every day.
We swear you'll have a good time. Cross our hearts.
As proof, here's Ariely on TED, talking about whether we're actually in control of our own decisions, which also includes perhaps our new favorite quote:
"If you ever go bar hopping, who do you want to take with you? You want a slightly uglier version of yourself. Similar ... but slightly uglier."
Dan Ariely starts at 8 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, 3200 California (at Presidio), S.F. Admission is $15-$30.Location Info
