Tell Me About Your Bike: Street Interviews with Cyclists

bike puddle.jpg

Welcome to The Spokesman, our weekly bicycle column written by French Clements, a San Francisco resident and distance cyclist who considers it pretty routine to ride his bike to Marin County or San Jose and back. He belongs to a club, the SF Randonneurs, and is active in numerous aspects of the cycling community. For those of you wondering, the title of this column is a slightly tongue-in-cheek merging of bicycling and blogging terms, not a claim that Clements speaks for anyone but himself.

Tell me about your bike.

It's a Miyata. I've had it for about a year. I don't know what year it is. It's got these great handlebars that allow me to be upright, which is great for me. I just filled up the tires, which feels nice. And I've got to fix these baskets [pedal cages]!

And from the claim check on your handlebars, it looks like you recently did a little bike parking with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition?
Yeah, this is actually old, but I've kept it on here to remind myself that I get a free tube at some point.

Where did you get your bag?
It's a hand-me-down from a friend. She got it in Europe. I use it pretty much every day.

Obviously you've never touched the drivetrain since you got the bike.
I don't even know what that is.

Ha! It's basically everything that the chain touches. Well, okay, I think that's it.
I thought you were gonna ask me about my outfit!

Right! Tell me about your outfit.
Well, it's tricky to find a good balance between riding to work and being at work. You have to find the right pants, have a top that's breathable, wear something that won't show the chain grease. Wool is great. And you've got to have a scarf. Not right now, but hey, this is San Francisco -- at nighttime, you've got to keep covered. And cover the back. In acupuncture, there are some points there that if they get exposed to the elements, they can create a lot of pain.
