Castro Features Four Films That Show Off the Fashion of Jean Paul Gaultier
We've had it all wrong: The greatness of a film is not measured by who is playing the lead, but what that person is wearing. That's right, we're talking about fashion. Mise en scène, the intricate design aspects of a film, is positively crucial when narrating the storyline. A pioneer in the world of haute couture, Jean Paul Gaultier, transcended the fashion world and participated in films that feature some of his most stunning pieces of wearable artwork. The Jean Paul Gaultier Fashion Film Series, Thursday and Friday at the Castro Theatre, presents these handsome pieces in the state Gaultier initially intended for them.
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
Thursday features Peter Greenaway's visually extravagant The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, which emphasizes a multitude of colors, including deep, menacing, reds and empty, cold, whites -- all orchestrated by Gaultier's clothing. Also screening is Truth or Dare, a documentary on Madonna's 1990 Blonde Ambition tour featuring Gaultier's iconic (and then-confrontational) cone bra. The series continues Friday with The Fifth Element and The City of Lost Children.
We don't remember this being very scandalous, but then again maybe it wasn't in S.F.
The film series coincides with "The Fashion World of John Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk" at the de Young Museum.
The Jean Paul Gaultier Fashion Film Series runs April 5-6 at The Castro Theatre, 429 Castro (at Market), S.F. Admission is $7.50-$10.
