Dress Up and Watch the Oscars at Two S.F. Neighborhood Theaters
It's the time of year when Hollywood shines the spotlight on itself, and the Balboa and the Roxie theaters bring the red carpet to San Francisco on Sunday evening by showing the Academy Awards telecast on the big screen. Writer and performer Reed Kirk Rahlmann returns to the Balboa this year as master of ceremonies, offering entertainment during commercial breaks in the program. We imagine a lot of the night's entertainment will come from the Balboa's guests, who are encouraged to dress up as their favorite nominated movie or star. (Organizers tell us that literal translation and bad puns are fair game.) Several prizes are up for grabs, and the person who can correctly guess the most Oscar winners gets a season pass to the theater.

Meanwhile, across town in the Mission, the Roxie plans its own Oscar-iffic get-together.
It's called Up the Oscars! (exclamation point not ours) The Roxie provides hors-d'oeuvres, and although the usual concessions will be available too, staffers urge guests to bring refreshments because it's a long show. "Also, bring high heels and a bad attitude," says the Roxie website.
If you want a quick reminder of who's been nominated for what Oscar, look at this really cool video clip we found that lets you link to trailers of individual films.
Both events happen Sunday, Feb. 26.
The Balboa's celebration starts at 3:30 p.m.; admission is $10. The Roxie's Up the Oscars! starts at 3:45 p.m.; admission is $12.
