Sadie Smythe of BedPost Confessions Dishes About Open Marriages and Her First Orgasm

​On Thursday night at the Makeout Room, Sadie Smythe will share with San Franciscans the story of her first ever orgasm. SFWeekly thought maybe we should get to know her a little bit better first.

The former Alameda resident and current Austin-based blogger at sadiesopenmarriage.com brings BedPost Confessions, her excellent erotic readings series and podcast, to San Francisco for the first time, and she's hoping to lay locals' kink cards on the table too.

Have you always been so open about talking about your own sex life?
Nooo! Not at all. I once thought of myself as kind of a prude.

What changed?
I think as we age, we become more comfortable with our sexuality. When I opened my marriage five years ago, I discovered a whole new aspect of my sexuality. I'd come home after having these experiences with men and women and tell my husband about them all (and I say all, I don't mean I was out everyday, screwing around, but every couple of weeks or so).

He was so entertained that he encouraged me to start blogging. And when I did, I really started looking at my sexuality and talking about it out loud, that's how I came to open up.

​Have you already planned what you're going to share with the San Francisco audience?

The story I will tell at BedPost SF is the story of my first orgasm, when I was nine years old. It was an exciting surprise.

Do you ever think, "I can't believe everyone knows this about me?"
I have an 11-year-old daughter, so I'm not quick to share that kind information with her friends' parents, or teachers from her school. But in every context other than that, I'm a pretty open book.

Do you want to tell me how the BedPost Confessions started?
I'm just gonna go. I'm just gonna talk.

I had been living in the Bay Area, and I moved to Austin, and met this woman, Rosie Q, from Craigslist. She had posted an ad for starting an erotic reading series. We met and talked about doing it, but it wasn't until a couple years later, I met Mia Martina, a sex blogger from New York who was moving to Austin.

She said, "You know, wouldn't it be cool if we did a sexually themed reading series?" And I said, yes, that's a great idea. In fact, we had that idea two years ago. So I called Rosie, I hadn't talked to her in two years. We all met, and decided to do it. I can't remember which one of us had the idea to bring the audience confession into it, though.

How does that work?
Every month, we have about five or six artists - we call them artists because they're generally people who write professionally or want to. And we have two acts, but in between the acts, we take submissions from the audience. We have cards that we put at everybody's seats that say "I confess..." and we encourage people to write from their own sexual confessions anonymously, and then we collect those and we read those on stage. It's a blast.

What kind of response does that get?
That is the part across the board that people respond to the best. Because what that does, which is what we try and do with Bedpost Confessions, is to unify us as a group, and as sexual beings. The audience starts hearing that there are people sitting among them that have these interesting stories. They go, "Oh, so I'm not the only pervert."

What do you expect when you come to San Francisco?
I think the audience will probably be pretty similar to the audience in Austin. The audience in Austin is extremely receptive. The most common comment that we get to our shows is, "this is so important." When we first started, we didn't understand the gravity of what we might be embarking upon. But also, we don't have anything else like that in Austin.

I think, in San Francisco, this is the Bay Area, it could be that we are just a blip on the radar. I mean, the Folsom Street Fair is this weekend. I think we'll just have to see. I'm so excited.
