There has to be a way to go out and have fun at night without serious liver damage and a large dent in your wallet. One solution? Partner dancing.
But I have two left feet! you might protest. Well, lucky for you, S.F. is home to a number of great dancefloors which offer lessons followed immediately by dancing all night long -- starting tonight!
Fun, affordable, and sociable cardiovascular exercise -- what more could you want? So grab a partner to cozy up with, or go solo to meet some new faces, and check out this calendar of daily dancing we've put together for you.
Wednesday -- Ballroom
Whether you've always wanted to go to a ball Disney-princess style, or you're hooked on Dancing with the Stars, you can learn how to glide across the floor at the Pick School of Ballroom Dancing. Wednesday nights offer Viennese waltz or rumba at weekly or drop-in rates. Check out the calendar for more.
Thursday -- Tango
Get in touch with your inner Latin lover at the
biggest tango milonga in town. Christy Cote and Adolfo Cazarry teach a
free beginners' class at 7p.m, followed by an intermediate/advanced class at 8 ($15). The milonga runs from 8:45 p.m. until 12:30 a.m.
Friday -- Back to Blues
Thank God it's Friday Night Blues at Studio Gracia in SOMA, which offers two classes starting at 8 p.m. before a night of dancing until 1 a.m. $10 for dancing only, $5 extra for each class. Studio Gracia also offers classes throughout the week in salsa, Argentine tango, and Brazilian samba. There's also an intriguing "Embodied Waves" class which someone should go check out.
Saturday -- Salsa
If you're looking to learn a dance that will make you exude sexiness, look no further than Cafe Cocomo. Despite its odd name (comatose coconuts come to mind), Cafe Cocomo is the heart of the S.F. salsa scene, with lessons offered four days a week by different instructors and dancing every night. $10 for all-night dancing, lesson included.
Sunday -- Lindy Hop
What could be better than dancing outdoors on a sunny Sunday afternoon?
Lindy in the Park offers free outdoor swing in Golden Gate Park every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a
free half-hour lesson by
Hep Jen starting at noon. A rotation of volunteer DJs mean that each week's music is fresh and varied. Hop to your heart's content!
Monday -- Blues
Chase away start-of-the-week blues with intimate and mellow blues dancing at
Shades of Blue, which plays traditional and alternative-blues/fusion music. Classes start at 8:30 p.m. and dancing goes from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. $12 for classes and dancing, $6 dancing only.
Tuesday -- Swing
Jump and jive at Club Verdi's
Tuesday Night Jump, which offers regular classes in Lindy and Balboa (shuffly swing dancing made for small spaces) starting at 7. For the more adventurous, there is also a Taster Swing Class at 9 with a different dance taught each week, including Charleston, East Coast, and Shag, etc. Once you've got your swing-out down, rock out til midnight to live music with Stompy Jones.
